Chin Augmentation Q & A
What is a Chin Augmentation?
Chin implants can increase the size and projection of a chin that is not in proportion with the forehead and mid-face. A small or recessed chin can also be described as one that seems to disappear into the neck of an individual of normal weight, rather than appearing as a distinct facial feature.
The chin is an important component of the lower facial 1/3 and can truly alter the appearance not only of the entire face but specifically of the nasal subunit. An overly long or projected nose may in fact be normal if the lower facial 1/3 is more proportional. Chin augmentation can make an overly projected nose appear more facial aesthetically pleasing. The chin should be on the same level or plane as a line drawn down from the lower lip. If the chin is behind this plane, a chin implant can help achieve better facial balance.
Retracted chins, in addition to altering the impression of the nose, can also give a more aged and full appearance to the neck region. Chin implant or augmentation surgery, through liposuction of the neck as well as the chin implant itself, can portray a more pleasing cervico-mental (neck jaw) angle and demonstrate a more youthful appearance. In men it can give more definition and provide a strong Roman appearance that can serve as a distinguishing look. In women, it helps provide a sharp angle to the neck that is more feminine and attractive. Book your free consultation today to meet with Dr. Maki.

What Can I Expect After a Chin Augmentation?
The patient usually goes home within a few hours of surgery, but cannot resume full normal activity for about 10 days. Often times the only pain that is involved is a result of the liposuction versus the actual chin implant itself. Most patients must limit chewing and stay on a soft diet for a few days.
The dressing which is typically a neck strap will remain in place for five to seven days. It takes about six weeks for swelling to resolve and the result is a new sharp angle to the neck helping achieve new symmetry to the lower facial subunit in accordance with the entire face as a unit.
